AFH Competition, Amazon region of Ecuador
Kallari Association is a cooperative of organic cocoa producers and artists, who in 2004 won the prestigious Presidium award from Slow Food for their sustainable approach. The competition program called for a new chocolate factory and community center, and was administered by the not-for-profit group Architecture for Humanity, which strives to link the design community to humanitarian causes around the globe. The design utilizes a concrete structure to address earthquake concerns, while the community center roof revives a community long house form that is nearly-extinct in an area where it was once common. Wood is used as temporary shoring for the concrete, as is typical; and the design then reuses it for both the community center veranda railing and the factory brise-soleil.
