South Facade
Performing Arts Center, Bloomington, Illinois
While at Hammond Beeby Rupert Ainge, Doug Sandberg was the project architect and designer for this project - from concept through construction completion. The City of Bloomington purchased a Scottish Rite Temple, built in 1921, with the intention of creating a multi-use performing arts venue that would act as a catalyst for a new Cultural District in the downtown area. At $12,000,000 and 85,000 square feet, the project included a major interior renovation and an addition. The auditorium was renovated to meet the demanding acoustical requirements of the Illinois Symphony Orchestra; a new accessible entry was provided; and varying degrees of renovation work was completed for nearly all front-of-house and back-of house areas. An addition was necessary to accommodate a busy load-in schedule of touring shows, along with the theater’s storage and staging requirements.
